About Me

Luca van Straaten

Hi, I'm Luca van Straaten, an electrical engineer based in Delft, interested in embedded systems, prototyping, instrumentation. My passion for electronics started at a young age when my father taught me how to fix my first cable, and it has shaped my entire journey ever since.

I enjoy designing and prototyping hardware and software; anything from embedded controllers and PCBs to complete electrical systems. Over the years I've built and worked on a wide range of projects such as custom LED controllers, automation tooling, 3D printers, home servers and automation, refitting a sailing boat, and full EV conversions.

One of my favourite long-term projects has been converting a BMW Z3 into a fully electric car, including designing the HV and LV systems, embedded control electronics, and safety systems. I document some of this work here on this website.

I spend a lot of time at RevSpace, my local hackerspace, where I work on electronics, learn from others, collaborate on odd technical problems, and sometimes just hang out with people who share the same curiosity.

Professionally, I work on electrical and instrumentation systems, industrial hardware, and test setups for the offshore world. I enjoy roles where I can stay hands-on, solve real engineering problems, and help bring ideas to life through rapid prototyping, iteration and design cycles.

Outside of engineering, you`ll often find me flying drones or gliders, driving or building electric vehicles, or out on the water sailing. If you`re interested in collaborating or discussing electronics, engineering, or unusual technical ideas, feel free to reach out!

You can follow some of my work on GitHub or explore the projects here on my website.
